TIGERS MAKE IT THREE ON THE TROT 21ST AUGUST 2011
Westlawn Tigers hosted the Woolgoolga Wolves on Saturday evening at Barnier Park Junction Hill. For the purists of the game there wasn't much to recommend from the tussle. In the words of coach Robert Usher "Tigers made some silly mistakes but learned a valuable lesson on how to win a game ugly. To win three in a row is a fantastic result and is reward for continued improvement throughout the season."
The first half saw a fairly even struggle with the Wolves going ahead courtsey of a Tigers error in the box which resulted in a successfully taken penalty to the Wovles. The Tigers pulled apart the Wolves defence 5 or 6 times during the first half but were unable to convert any of that pressure to goals. At half time the score remained 1-0 to the Wovles.
As has happened so many times this season the Tigers asserted much more pressure in the second half which resulted in goals flowing. James Joyce, in another man of the match performance scored twice showing great composure and deft touches. Jim Connor was also rewarded for his bullocking work with a goal of his own. Joyce was able to chest the ball to Connor who neatly lobbed the keeper to make the score three nil.
Coach Usher has been particularly pleased with some of his young brigade in first grade. Eighteen year old Zac Mawhinney, and brothers Aiden (19) and Brand(17) Cavanagh-Nessa have been exemplary throughout the season and have shown maturity on the pitch beyond their years.
Providing the weather permits, Westlawn Tigers will be hosted by the Maclean Bobcats on Wednesday night at Yamba in a catch up game deferred from round 2 of the competition. For the final game of the season Tigers will host the Sawtell Scorpions next Saturday evening and are hoping to avenge the previous 2-0 defeat by the Scorpions in round nine.
The Youth/Reserve grade game resulted in a 3-0 win to the Wolves. The young Tigers were outgunned by a Wolves side pressing towards finals football. Wolves scored in the first minute and whilst the Tigers were unlucky not to score on a couple of occasions they could not reel in the deficit. On a positive note, all of this young brigade are eligible for the same grade next season and with this year's experience behind them will undoubtedly be much more competitive next season.

PANTHERS VS YAMBA YELLOW 11TH JUNE 2011
The Crown Hotel Westlawn Panthers hosted the unbeaten Yamba Yellow in a wet weather catch up game on the Saturday of the long weekend. The Panthers have had a good run of form of late and were sitting in fourth position but were yet to play any of the top three sides. Both sides were missing some of their regular line up but it still proved to be a tight and entertaining match.
Yamba started appyling all the pressure early on however the Pantehrs ground out some possession, and the match was evenly balanced. The Panthers went in to the break one goal up when Shorn Kippax found the net from a left foot chip after several deflected saves by Yamba keeper Phil Kelly.
Yamba struck back in the second half with an evasive run by Jeremy Walters, beating the keeper and sweeper together to find the net and draw level. Westlawn had the chance to take the lead again twice in the later stages of the second half with a penalty well saved by Kelly who also saved a later one on one which enabled Yamba to stay level at 1-1 and share the competition points. Yamba Yellow Keeper Phil Kelly was clearly the player of the match with plently of quality saves. For the Panthers, Shorn Kippax and Jamie Stockton shared their player of the match in what was a great all round team performance.
The Westlawn Panthers will now take on the competiton leading Yamba Breakers 3pm next Saturday at Barnier Park.

GRANDFINAL WRAP-UP 16th and 18th September 2011

Congratulations to the Bobcats on an outstanding final campaign. Bobcats won the Grandfinal Series against the Tigers 3-2.

Under 16s came up against a well drilled Maclean Bobcats team who have been undefeated all season. It was apparent from early on that the game was going to be fast and hard. The Tigers defensive line was kept on their toes the entire game and a great tussle broke out between the Tigers James Butcher and the Number 10 Bobcat. Neither player was going to give an inch, even a millimetre for that matter! Both went in hard to every ball and never gave up. This tussle alone gave the crowd something to cheer about(or argue about depending on whose side you were going for). The Bobcats got some lucky breaks early in the first half which saw them capitalise on these opportunities. The half time score was 2-0. The tigers came out in the second half hungry but then suddenly the game seem to change. The Bobcats struck time and again. The Tigers had their chances on goal but just could not find the back of the net. A 6-0 well-deserved win to the Bobcats.
Under 15s had their work cut out for them from the beginning with only 10 players taking to the park. The Yamba Breakers were lucky that no other junior team had made it to the Grand final so they could booster their team with the cream of the crop from the age divisions below. Tigers started strong and got early points on the board. The Tigers fans were excited! In usual Under 15 style they took their foot off the pedal just a tiny bit. The Tigers weren't marking tight and the Breakers were awarded a dotty for a hand ball in the box. Poor Jake Whitton had no chance in stopping that penalty. The score was locked at 1 all going into the break. Both teams came back after the break hungrier than ever. Breakers got points on the board early in the second half. The Tigers dropped their head a little for a few moments then the Tigers crowd kick in and next thing the Tigers were on the prowl. Tigers attacked the goal and any break the Breakers made was quickly shut down by Eboine Phelps, Tayla Whalan, Jacob Purser, Jesse Benfield and the ever reliable Nathan Butterick. The Tigers break finally came with about 8 minutes left on the clock. And thats how the normal game time score finished 2-2. No-one likes to see a game won on a penalty shootout but a winner must be decided. The first shootout saw both kickers kick straight to the Keeper. But eventually the Tigers came up triumphs. A great achievement for a team to play with only 10 players and win a grandfinal.
Under 14s went into their grand final as under dogs. This Bobcats outfit has been the cream of the crop all season in this age division. The kids all took to the paddock in above 30 degrees temperatures which was going to play a factor in any game. Congratulations must go to the ref who reduced the second half to quarters so the kids could rehydrate in the hot conditions. The Bobcats came out firing strong in the first half seeing th etigers on the back foot with their defenders working extra hard to keep the ball out of the box. Bobcats netted two goals before the half time break. The Tigers half time team talk worked wonders and the Tigers came out hard in the second half trying to make the most of any opportunities that came their way. But the Tigers just could not break the Bobcats defensive line. With five minutes left on the clock the Bobcats sealed the win without another goal.
Under 13s were firm favourites to take out this match even though they knew they were up against a competitive side especially since they knocked out the Majos Lions the week before. The first half was a hard fought tussle with both sides seeing equal time with the ball. The Bobcats had a couple of shots on goal but the Tigers strong defensive side didn't let their keeper see much of the ball. Bobcats best chance came when a hand ball penalty was awarded to them only a couple of yards out of the box. But the Tigers defence shut down this opportunity pretty quickly. The second half was a different story with the Tigers dominating the game. They had more ball time and many more chances on goal. But each chance went to the keeper or hit the crossbar. As any seasoned player knows only a handful of opportunities come your way in a good game of football and you must capitalise on these moments. The Tigers didn't. Normal time finished at nil all, which saw the game go to penalty shootouts. The tigers Jesse Powell put his hand up to be goalie and had an outstanding start saving the first gaol and netting his penalty shot. The Bobcats came out on top winning the shootout 3-1.
Under 12s outfit had a lot to prove this week, they were determined they were not going to lose to this Bobcats again. The first half saw the game go from end to end with both teams taking it to each other. Congratulations must go to both teams defensive line for the score to stay at nil all going into the half time break. Tigers came out roaring in the second half and had greater ball possession. They made the most of their opportunities and found the back of the net with about 10 minutes to go. The Tigers were not about to let the Bobcats get one in and they decided to attack relentlessly the remaining of the match. This attacking approach paid dividends with the Tigers sinking another ball a few minutes before the fulltime whistle. Well done to all the players and Coach of the Year Craig Phelps and Manager Klyee Baker.
The overall winner on the day was football with hard fought matches played in great spirit. This was no more evident than in the HUGE football match that took place on field two where kids of all ages and all clubs across the Clarence came together to play the greatest game on earth - Football.

FINAL WRAP-UP 9th/10th September 2011

What an amazing achievement for the Tigers Football club - every competitive junior team through to the grand finals! The club is immensely proud of this fact and congratulate all coaches on this amazing achievement.
Friday saw us all watching the clouds wondering how much rain could fall before the games would have to be called off. The first hit out on the weekend was for the Under 16s who were to play at Yamba but got a phone call mid afternoon telling them their game had been transferred to the Maclean Showground. The tigers went down expecting the field to be a bit slippery underfoot. But when they got there and their game started all the players seemed to be somewhere else. No-one was on their game and this showed by the score-line at half time, they were down 2 nil. The half time chat was if you don't want to be here well then go home now, but if you want to play let's get out there and PLAY. And that's what they did. They found their mo-jo and were playing like a team that wanted to be there. They scored two quick goals in the first ten minutes and then went on to secure the win another two goals. Yamba made a last ditch effort and got another on the board just before the full-time whistle went. A lucky escape for the Tigers. Next week they will have to have all guns blazing form the beginning of the match.
Saturday saw everyone wake up to a sunny and windy day - just what the field needed to dry out. That, and three people who spent hours Friday afternoon using sponges and chamois to soak up the water(thankyou Dick, Adam and Lauren Pryor) The Under 12s were determined another Maclean Bobcat team were not going to deny them a spot in the grand final. The Bobcats were equally determined to be the ones who won that last spot. And that's how the game was played, from one end to the other. Both teams were on the attack the entire game. Tigers got the break with five minutes to go before half time when a Bobcat players hand touched the ball on the edge of the box. Tigers were awarded a penalty. Tom Baker stepped up to take the dotty and slotted it home in the bottom left hand corner pocket. Tigers had the majority of chances in the second half and made some get attacks on goal but could not find the back of the net again. But one goal is all it takes to win a match. The Tigers are seeking revenge against the other Bobcats team in next week's Grand Final.
The next match of the day was the Under 14s taking on the red hot Coutts team. What a season this Tiger team has had! Their first semi-final series and they were playing for the chance to play in their first ever grand final. This team also had the extra pressure of their coach and a player missing a very important wedding so they could participate in this match. So the pressure was on that it would not all be for nothing. And what a match we witnessed. At the ten minute mark a penalty was awarded to the Tigers 10 metres outside the box. Sheldon O'Loughlin stepped up and lobbed the ball over all the defence and even the keeper so it found the back of the net. All the team and spectators were in shock, the score had ticked over. After the initial shock the goal seemed to wake up the Coutts team and they began to attack attack attack and they dominated the next 10 minutes of play. At the 23rd minute Coutts persistence paid off with a perfectly timed hit from outside the box that had Keeper Brad Powell diving for the ball, unfortunately the ball was just to well timed. Half time saw the score 1-1. Ten minute into the second half saw Sam Powell taken out in the box. Tigers were awarded a dotty. Our chance to get in front. Sam stepped up to take the shot and netted the ball. Unbeknown to the Tigers the Ref had blown the whistle, as one of the Tigers had overstepped the mark. While the Tigers were celebrating the ref and Coutts were waiting for dotty to be taken again. O-Loughlin stepped up to re-take the penalty, only he found the Keeper - the score was still locked at 1 all. Play went from one end to the other. A ball was beautifully worked up the park from Keeper Noah Reardon to Lauren Pryor through the midfield to Brad Powell who made a break through the Coutts defence to have a one on one with the Keeper. Brad let rip with a shot and it looked for sure it was going to hit the net, but that silly post jumped out and got in the way. Unfortunately for the Tigers no-one was following the ball through as it would have been a certain gaol. The next break came from Coutts, against the run of play a Coutts player had a one on one opportunity with Reardon. Reardon came out and attacked the striker, putting the striker off as he made his shot - it went wide. The 50th minute mark saw the Tigers finally break through. Brad Powell made a run from a beautiful through ball and headed for goal, he wasn't going to let any goalpost stop him this time. 2-1 to the Tigers. ROARRRR. Two minutes later saw Coutts give another penalty away from a hand ball outside the box. Sam Powell lobbed a beautiful ball into the box to find O'Loughlin's head which then found a Coutts player on the line who then found Brad Powell's foot, who let one rip and the Coutts Keeper made a cracker of a save. All the Tigers played with true heart deserved the win. Coutts kept attacking to the end but it was a day for the Tigers with a 2-1 win.
What a weekend coming up. Congratulations must also go the Maclean Bobcats, they also have all their junior teams through to the Grand final. We look forward to the clash of the cats on the weekend. Goodluck to all teams. And everyone be ready to hear that mighty Tiger roaring all weekend.

SEMI-FINAL WRAP UP 2nd/3rd September 2011

Westlawn Tigers final campaign began with the Under 15s getting an early morning phone call telling them Yamba field were too wet and the game had been transferred to Maclean Showground. The Tigers thought they were going into the match as under dogs considering they only had 10 players who could go on the card as their regular fillins were all in finals as well, and they had to choose what final to play in. But when the Tigers arrived they found Yamba were in the same boat as them. Yamba's coach received a last minute phone call telling him he had a player out due to illness, so Yamba took to the field with only 9 players. Tigers dominated the game from the start netting two goals before the 15minute. Then their concentration lapsed and Yamba struck back with two goals and the half time score was 2 all. After a half-time talk by their coach the Tigers came out all guns blazing, netting goal after goal with the final score being 9-2.
Closer to home the Under 16s had some dramas of their own. Barnier Park was on the verge of being closed. The referee was not keen to play in the slippery conditions, and seek advice from NCF. It was decided that coaches had the final say on whether the game went ahead or not. Majos coach was not keen to proceed, but the Tigers coach felt he could not deny the kids a game as they were all there ready to fire. A brave decision considering the Tigers would have been straight through to the major semi-final if the game had been cancelled as they finished third. Also a decision he was doubting when the game went to penalty shoot-outs. Thats right after 10 minutes of extra time each way still no team had an outright win. So it was all down to the Keepers and the shot takers to decide the game. The outcome went the Tigers way and they get to play off for the remaining semi-final position this Friday night.
A bright sunny Saturday morning greeted the Under 12 team when they took on the Maclean Bobcats. Poor Barnier Park had seen better days, with some every slippery areas. The first goal went to the Bobcats after a run against play. The bobcats surprised the Tigers and turned the play their way and slotted a ball into the net before the Tigers even realised. This fired up the Tigers and they dominated play for the rest of the match. They made relentless attacks on goal. They were extremely un-lucky only to slot one goal in, which resulted the game ending in normal time as 1 all. Ten minutes extra each way saw the Tigers dominate play again and they found the back of the net in the first ten minutes of play. The little warriors bodies slowly started to waiver. The Bobcats capitalised on this and made an attack on gaol to make the score 2-2 at the end of extra time. It was unfortunate that a Maclean parent felt the need to run onto the field and hug a Maclean player. All parents should now know by Under 12s that parents are never allowed on the field at any time during a game. The penalty shootout found the Bobcats victorious. This little team of Tigers should hold their heads high, as the played by the rules and really were the dominate team on the day, but sometimes that is just football.
As it should be Majos Lions faced off against the Tigers in the under 13 match at Barnier Park. It was a late start after the long Under 12 match, but this did not faze the kids. They all enjoyed watching the exciting penatly shootout before their game. This was an odd game with much of the play being played out in the midfield. Neither team had that many attacks on goals, but the Tigers would of lead the statistics in shots on goal. Twenty minutes into the game Tigers were awarded a penalty about 10 yards outside the box. Jesse Powell stepped up to take the shot. The Lions were all lined up along their line. Jesse hit the ball sweetly and it was going for the top corner pocket - it was in for sure. But then a Lions player scooped the ball out of the back of the net with his hand and back into play. It was not the Keeper. The player was sown the red card, and Jesse had to step up again and take the dot shot. It found the net. The game went from one end of the field to the other. Stand out players for the Tigers were Joel Bartrim and Jesse Powell. The final score was 1-0.
The Under 14 Tigers were in their first semi-final ever! They had to travel to Maclean to take on the Bobcats and the game was running late due to previous games going into extra time. The Bobcats attacked early but unfortunately it was the Tigers who scored first, but it was for the Bobcats. This seemed to unsettle the Tigers for the entire first half. The Bobcats slotted two more goals in and the half time score was 3-0. Coach Nelson gave the team a pep-talk at half time which did wonders. The team came out more relaxed in teh second half and they had gotten rid of the semi-final nerves. In fact they dominated the second half and was the only team to score a goal. The game finished 3-1 to the Bobcats. The Tigers will play at home this weekend.
The final game of the day was the 3rd division Men Panthers taking on the Bobcats. The Panthers were aware of the losses the two junior teams faced against the Bobcats and were determined they were not going to let the Bobcats get another win over the Tigers! They were on fire finding the net on numerous occasions. They weren't playing for sheep stations today - they were playing for sausages! They were making sure they would get a sausage at the end of their game. Final score was 5-1.
Overall a very successful weekend for the Tigers and the club wishes the four teams playing this weekend all the best of luck.
UNDER 9 PANTHERS VS JAGUARS 27th August 2011

Well talk about slippery when wet! That's how the game was played when Westlawn Panthers took on the Westlawn Jaguars head to head Saturday morning at Barnier Park. The last game for the season saw these two teams thrash it out under the heavy cloud cover and non-stop winter rain. A toss won by the Panthers had them choosing a North facing goal. Off to an easy goal within minutes by Panthers Jackson Nilon. The Jaguars goalie Aiden Elward wasn't going to let one slip by him so easy next time, and true to that testament he fired up some massive defense. As the rain persisted so did the players. First half carved a two all level playing field, with both teams not interested in the break and were straight back on the field. Leading the point score into the second half was Jaguar team mates, Chloe Rankin, Kurt Webb from the back, feeding the ball up the midfield to Cooper Johnson and up to forward Bowen Taylor then finally to Lochlan Elward to score victorously. Panthers were down but not out with still plenty of energy and steam literally coming off the top of their little heads. A familiar rivalry became apparent soon after, as Josh Weatherstone and Lochy Elward fired up and renewed their on field battle for neither was going to allow the other the ball. At one point Jason Durrington came sliding along the wet grass tackling for the ball, looking for the pass down the line - Reuben Litchfield skillfully played the ball to Flynn Shacklady who then blocked the path of on coming Jaguars which redirected the ball to Josh Weatherstone who then scored for the Panthers. A huge team effort was put in by all especially Harry Ashenden and Natasha Clausen from the Panthers who lent their efforts and gave some great defense and attacking played on the Jaguars team. The soggy but jubilant outcome was a 7-3 win by the Panthers with Player of the Match going to Jayden Lauire for his efforts when faced with difficult climatic conditions .. he doesn't like to get dirty, it only makes him cranky- a good thing if he is on your side. The little pocket rocket took it out on the ball and would come from nowhere to stake claim. For the last game of the season it was a great way to finish, how often are you allowed to play in the mud and rain with your mates and your parents stand by and cheer you on.
